Bench oscilloscopes are used when most portable scopes simply do not offer the functionality required for debugging jobs with complex mixed signals.  They are more often used for design, or intricate systems analysis tasks, where multiple trigger settings and advanced waveform and navigation capabilities are required.  Such laboratory oscilloscopes are now all digital storage oscilloscopes (DSO) because they off better more-organised storage, advance trigger settings, and improved measurement and display features.

Depending on the signal analysis taking place, it’s important to use the correct type of scope probe, since there are many different types, some for high voltage, some for low voltage and some that are more sensitive than others or more sensitive to particular signals.

Oscilloscope FAQs

An oscilloscope measures voltage waves, but it can also be used to measure current, resistance, sound, capacitance, frequency and more.

There are two main types of oscilloscopes: analog and digital. Most engineers today use digital oscilloscopes, which fall into five categories: digital storage oscilloscopes, digital phosphor oscilloscopes, mixed signal oscilloscopes, mixed domain oscilloscopes, and digital sampling oscilloscopes.

A mixed signal oscilloscope (MSO) is a type of digital storage oscilloscope designed to capture, display, and compare both analog and digital signals.

Scientists, engineers, physicists, medical researchers, automotive mechanics, repair technicians and educators use oscilloscopes to see signals change over time. There is no shortage of applications for this powerful instrument.
