How many rails the board needs, and whether a person or a script will be setting them. Almost everything else follows from those two.
Analogue Linear DC Supplies
Knobs, meters and nothing to learn. Three single-output models from 90 W to 600 W, and three triple-output models whose two adjustable channels link in series for double the voltage or in parallel for double the current. Ripple below 1 mV rms throughout.
Programmable Triple Output
Two adjustable channels of 0 to 32 V at 3.2 A that link by key into series or parallel, and a third rail switchable between 2.5, 3.3 and 5 V. Settable over-current protection, five stored setups, and a SCPI command set over USB.
Programmable with a Colour Display
The same 220 W triple output with a 4.3 inch display that plots the output as it runs and steps through stored timing profiles without a PC. USB and LAN both fitted. The two models differ only in resolution: 1 mV and 1 mA on the GPS-3303X, 10 mV and 10 mA on the GPS-3303DPX.
Four-Channel Programmable
Four identical isolated channels, each 0 to 32 V at up to 10 A, sharing 384 W however you divide it. List sequencing, synchronous output, per-channel electronic fuses with settable delay and remote sensing to 1 V.
One rail wants a single-output model and the GPS-3020S will give it 20 A. A board with a positive and a negative supply wants a triple, whose two adjustable channels pair about a common point. Four independent rails want the GPS-3004, and nothing smaller will do it.
If the supply sits on a bench and a person sets it, the analogue GPS-3000 series is simpler and cheaper: there is no menu and nothing to configure. If a script sets it, or the same sequence runs every time, the programmable models earn their price the first week.
Channel ratings do not always sum to what the instrument delivers. The GPS-3004 shares 384 W across four channels rated 160 W each, so add your rails up against the instrument figure rather than multiplying the channel one. The single and triple models in the GPS-3000 series have no such sharing.
At 10 A a metre of thin wire costs you real volts, and the supply regulates at its own terminals, not at your board. Remote sensing fixes that by measuring at the load. The GPS-3020S and the GPS-3004 have it; the smaller models do not.
