OBV-80B Automatic Oil Dielectric Tester

Set the method, close the lid and press Start. The OBV-80B settles the sample, raises the voltage at your chosen rate, records every breakdown, stirs between them and prints the average.

0 to 80 kV

From a 1.5 kVA step-up transformer, ±(3% of reading + 2 digits).

Three standards built in

IEC 156, ASTM D877 and ASTM D1816, plus your own method.

Up to six breakdowns

Stirred between each, averaged automatically.

Printed on the spot

Results and averages straight from the built-in printer.

Applications

Where it’s used

The breakdown voltage of insulating oil is a quick check of its condition, and shows when the oil needs treatment or replacing.

Transformer test stations

Routine acceptance and periodic checks on transformer oil before and after filling.

Power distribution and transmission

Regular oil checks on transformers across the network, in the lab or on site.

Railway systems

Traction and substation transformer oil, tested on site or in the depot.

Power plant maintenance

Oil checks on generator transformers and auxiliaries during planned outages.

How a test runs

One test, start to finish

Once you press Start, the whole sequence runs by itself.

kV time Maximum test voltage (MTV) Wait Breakdown 1 set rate Stir · pause Breakdown 2 Stir · pause Breakdown 3 … up to 6 Average, shown and stored
  1. Settle

The sample stands for the set wait time before the first rise.

  2. Rise

The voltage climbs at the rate set on the selector.

  3. Breakdown

The breakdown voltage is recorded and the voltage removed at once.

  4. Stir and pause

The oil is stirred and rested before the next rise.

  5. Average

After up to six breakdowns the average is shown, stored and ready to print.

Three standard methods, ready to run

Choose IEC 156, ASTM D877 or ASTM D1816 from the setup menu and set the maximum test voltage, from 10 to 80 kV in 10 kV steps. Then set the rate of rise the method calls for:

0.5 kV/s1 kV/s2 kV/s3 kV/s5 kV/s

The electrodes sit in a glass test cell cast in one piece, at the standard 2.5 mm gap, set with the master gauge supplied.

When the oil doesn’t break down. If the voltage reaches the maximum test voltage without a breakdown, the OBV-80B stops raising it and holds it for 50 seconds. If there is still no breakdown, the maximum test voltage is recorded as the result, so a strong sample is never pushed past the limit you set.
User method & manual mode

Your own method, or full control

For in-house procedures, the user method sets every stage of the cycle. Manual mode puts the rise in the operator’s hands.

Manual mode

Raise, lower and stop the voltage from the keys. After each breakdown the voltage is removed and the oil stirred automatically, then you start the next when ready. Up to six breakdowns, averaged and stored.

Product Features

Built for the job

One-piece glass test cell

Cast in one piece from special glass, so there are no joints to leak oil or pick up interference.

High-voltage end sampling

The test value is sampled at the high-voltage end and passed straight to the analogue-to-digital converter, avoiding errors in the analogue circuit.

Temperature and humidity on screen

A built-in sensor shows the ambient temperature and relative humidity beside the date and time, ready to note with the result.

Printer and stored results

Print each result and average on the spot. Recent tests are stored with their date and time, to review or print again later.
