The single biggest difference between the two series, and the reason to specify a 1000X.
On a conventional oscilloscope both channel grounds are tied together and to protective earth. Connect two probes to points at different potentials — across a shunt, either side of a switching device, or on a floating supply — and you create a short circuit through the instrument.
The usual workarounds are awkward: lifting the earth, using a differential probe, or measuring one point at a time. The GPS-1000X series removes the problem by isolating each channel from the others, from the multimeter input, from the power adaptor and from the USB port.
